Any person who either heard of or had any kind of relationship with Bollywood will swear by the fact that fame is a very short lived commodity. No matter how big or bright a star you are at the peak of your stardom, you eventually have to give way to the newer stars. This is the unforgiving world of Indian film industry; time will always catch up with you no matter who you are. But then there are those very few and rare souls in the history of Bollywood who have stayed as close to perfection as possible throughout their career. And the foremost example of a person, who has gone one step further to reverse the process of aging of her skill set, is undoubtedly Lata Mangeshkar. Some of her songs, more properly mentioned ‘Lata Mangeshkar Songs’ are the most amazing form of Indian Classical Music ever made.
It is very commendable indeed that she has not let time or any other factor affect her god gifted talent by even one bit. She has been the epitome of singing in the Indian film industry. From heartbroken songs of breaking up, to sultry songs that bring to life the onscreen chemistry of couples, she has sung all kinds of songs in her career. No other singer has been as devoted to her profession as she has been. She has seen a successful career spanning almost seven decades and she still continues to sizzle and dazzle through her voice in Indian Cinema.
It is of little surprise then that she has featured in the Guinness Book for recording the maximum number of song titles in the least time in the world. In fact in less than three decades she has been believed to have sung close to 25000 songs! It’s even more amazing to note that she has sung solo, duet or chorus in more than 20 Indian languages, a no meant feat by any professional standards.
Every music director that she has worked with, which is probably the highest number for any singer too; has only the sweetest and nicest of things to say about her. Considering that she entered the Indian film industry at the tender age of 13, with no training in music, under tragic and desperate circumstances; after her Father passed away. She was given her first singing break by Gulam Mohammad that same year.
She later moved to Bombay in 1945, which is where she began her professional training in Hindustani Classical singing. During this period she learnt under many famous and eminent gurus of this genre and picked up very fast. Mentor, Ghulam Haider gave her the first Bollywood song “Dil Mera Toda” from the movie Majboor in 1948. The rest as they say is history.
Her biggest hit songs include ones from movies like Baiju Bawara, Mughal e Azam, Aag, Shree 420, Madhumati, Devdas and Chori Chori. She has probably lent her melodious voice to many generations of actresses now. Right from Kalyaan – Anand, OP Nayyar, Naushaad, S D Burman and Shankar Jailkshan all the way to Shankar – Ehsaan – loy and AR Rahman, she has worked with all famous renowned music directors too.
Even today, at 81, Lata Di is still young, and ready to render heartwarming melodies for all those who love her as a music icon of India!
