Patriotic movies in the early times seemed to be so boring and made for the critic alone. But the trend has changed and Rang De Basanti has hard pinches of patriotism told in a indirect way. It is a story of five friends who live a careless life and how they turn into responsible Indian citizens. Alice Patten plays a film maker from London who flies down to India in search of 5 young men to play the roles of Indian revolutionaries. She reaches the five friends, Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi and Soha Ali Khan. They initially refuse but later agree. The movie actually enters into the story after the death of Madhavan in an air crash and the story takes a mode of revenge.

The masses expected a movie not so high in music as it was tagged a patriotic movie. But the trailers and the song releases took the audience by surprise with the hip and peppy ‘Rang De Basanti’ songs. The first video release was the title track ‘Rang De Basanti’ a comeback from Daler Mehendi. He is still the king of Punjabi pop and will make anyone do a bhangra on hearing it. Then there is “Apni tho Paathshala” which is a typical A.R Rehman creation, a perfectly made Indian song with western influences at songs.pk. This is a college campus hit. The song has another version also with the same tunes but more singers. The song that lingers on your tongue on a silent day will be ‘Tu Bin Bataye’ with its simple yet attractive melody. Soft and subtle, this song is a sure hit at the charts. The funky mood is recreated with ‘Khalbali’ with the middle-east rendition to it. To sum it all ‘Rang De Basanti’ simply rocks.
