Released on 8th Aug. 1997, Subhash Ghai’s Pardes casting Shahrukh Khan and Mahima Chaudhury in the main lead attained both commercial success and critical acclaim due to its unique storyline and lilting music. The movie revolves around Ganga, a girl who is an epitome of Indian culture. Her fatther’s friend, an NRI living in America, sees her and decides to make her his daughter in law who would inculcate Indian values to his America born son. He sends his protégé Arjun (Shahrukh Khan) to play cupid between them. She is brought to America which she was so eager to see. However, as the truth of the alien culture dawns upon her, she becomes totally estranged with both America and her America born fiancé.

The movie is high on cultural patriotism and its music very ably reflects the values propagated by it. The song I love my India, that plays with every Indian’s attachment to the land of his or her birth, whether overtly expressed or not, was an instant hit. So was the cry of a love stricken heart in meri mehbooba. However, the real icing on the cake proved to be the very subdued do dil mil rahe hain sang so evocatively by Kumar Shanu in the backdrop of a lilting tune being played on guitar.
